Happy Thanksgiving!

In the month of November, students have been learning about Native Americans. We are learning about their homes, clothing, beliefs, jewelry, and many other things they might have used or made.  Students have made Native American vests, headdresses, medallions, and tipis.  We are looking forward to continuing our learning when we return from Thanksgiving break.  We hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving!

This month students began learning about pumpkins in science. Students dug into their pumpkins and counted their seeds. They also added faces to their pumpkins.  The students also learned the life cycle of a pumpkin. We had so much fun!

One of our favorite times of the day is language work stations.  Students listen to stories on tape, work on computer learning games, write, read and work with the teacher in small groups.

We colored place mats and made Native American headbands with math patterns on them for the Thanksgiving feast. We got to sit with our Eighth grade reading buddies too.

We had a great time making butter for the feast too.

Mrs. Gentelin shook a little too hard and we had a butter mishap. Poor Hattie!

In October, the students enjoyed sorting and counting buttons.

We also really enjoyed our pumpkin observations.  We measured and weighed, floated and drew. We used math words and our 5 senses.

We’ve been having so much fun and learning so much this year.

In September, we used our senses to explore a real coconut after reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  Then we opened it to see what was inside.

We also tasted some sweetened coconut flakes.IMG_1531

It’s a tradition here at our school to celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast! We were able to make pumpkin pies to contribute to the meal this year…

imageimageOur class is discussing all the things we’re thankful for all of November. We have so many blessings! Some said they were thankful for family and friends, teachers, and some luxury items too!

Well, we are very nearly at the middle of the year!

In November, we have been learning about the various colonies and are now learning about the original 13 colonies and the events that happened there. We have been working on division in math and will begin touching on algebraic expressions. In science, we have been observing the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly. We currently have 6 in the Chrysallis (Pupa Stage). We hope to have them in the classroom and feed them oranges for the length of the life cycle of the butterfly. In reading, we have been reading “Fever 1793″ it is about the yellow fever epidemic.

Wednesday will be the Thanksgiving Feast, and the next Tuesday will be our class “pig out” party! I can’t believe that we are almost at the mid year point.
